my son, what have ye done.

i just read about this movie, and i'm itching to see it. sometimes i just love a creepy movie, and this one will certainly fit the bill. it's directed by werner herzog and produced by david lynch, so it's definitely got some big minds behind it. and it's based on true events, which always ups the creep factor. after i see this i will have to watch something sweet and fun like date night, just to even things out. if you live in chicago, it will be playing at the music box theater next month.

foxy.

i love the work of alyson fox.
her drawings have this really mesmerizing mix of sweetness and weirdness. i keep meaning to buy a print or two of hers to add to our hallway, but i never quite get around to it. until i make the purchase, looking online will have to be my fix.

take a seat.

chairs. they can be so beautiful, can't they? there is something about a well designed chair that makes me stop in my tracks. chairs aren't a huge commitment, so you can take more of a risk than you would with a couch. and when you sit down in a comfy one, everything seems to make sense. okay so maybe that is a kind of a dramatic thing to say about a chair, but the point is i love them. here are a few of my faves.

the jens risom rocker. a modern classic. i sat in one of these the other day, and let me tell you, that thing was comfy! perfect for a nursery or bedroom. the color is such a cool neutral, and it really gets that danish look down. it's pretty great.

the shaker settee. i can just see this in a long hallway, with coats hung up next to it and a line of shoes underneath. the hallway would preferably have a lovely wallpaper covering, naturally. this would look so great with a pattern peeking out from in between it's back spokes.

the eames molded rocker. it is so simple, lightweight, and surprisingly comfy. paul gave me a mini one for my birthday last year, and i love the way it sits on top of a pile of books on our coffee table. it looks so delicate.

the frank lloyd wright barrel chair. probably the least practical, but after seeing original ones during our tour of his home and studio, they will always have a place in my heart. i love how wright though about every single detail of the houses he built, right down to the furniture. i could see this in (a very lucky) kid's room.

all available at dwr.

if my camera were working (sad face) i would post some of the vintage chairs we have that i love so dearly. hopefully i will soon (are you listening camera gods? fix my little guy!)

ps. i don't know why the first 2 pictures are so small.
my apologies!

something different.

i'm usually drawn to really feminine, vintagey shoes. but these bad-ass strappy little suckers by pour la victoire are calling my name. one pair of each color, please.

a very strong option.

if i could wear only one clothing line this summer,
it might just be built by wendy.
everything is absolutely lovely, don't you think?
it all reminds me of a warm breeze.

wanderlust.

i'm not entirely sure why, but copenhagen is one of my dream vacation destinations. a friend of mine just got back from a trip there, and i am experiencing some major jealousy. everyone on their bikes, with their blonde hair and chic clothes.
i just want to walk around that city with a cup of coffee and people watch all day long.

when time allows.

i love to cook and bake. right now i don't have a lot of extra time on my hands, but when i do, these delicious items are high on my list of things to make.

cream biscuits.

mushroom pasta.

dulce de leche cheesecake squares.

tomato and sausage risotto.

my tummy is excited!

all available here, on one of the most wonderful food blogs i know.

easy breezy.

how prefect would this harvey faircloth jumper be for all of your spring and summer activities? picnics, bbq's, bike rides, movies in the park, star gazing, road trips, boat rides. as you can tell i am desperately looking for a work this puppy in to my closet.

available here, along with other temptations.

a fine substitute.

i was heartbroken when domino folded a year and a half ago (or was it longer? i have no sense of time). it was the only magazine i subscribed to, and i loved it oh so much. and to then have my subscription replaced with glamour? c'mon, that just wasn't fair. but then, not too long ago, there was a beacon of hope.
enter lonny magazine, an online only publication that is a pretty solid stand in for domino. of course, i still miss holding a magazine in my hands, but this definitely makes the separation easier.

hitting a stride.

okay, so maybe i'm biased because i work for them, but brooklyn industries' new spring/summer campaign is super charming. i love the models, and the styling is so fresh and approachable.
a job well done!

could the search be over?

i have been hunting for the perfect pair of menswear oxfords for over a year. could these be it? i ordered a few sizes to make sure to get one that fits. they come in a variety of widths and i have weird, narrow feet and usually have a hard time finding oxfords that don't gap at the sides. fingers crossed for these babies!

i ordered them from here.

update: they are everything i dreamed they would be

thank you.

i know it's not perfect, but i am so happy that the health bill passed earlier this week. finally, more people will be able to get the health coverage they need. of course, i wish health care could be completely free in this country, but i still think this bill is the kind of change we need. did you know that 85% of the money that we pay to health insurance companies will have to go directly to medical costs now? that is hugely exciting. i was watching rachel maddow the other night (love her!) and she said something that sums it up pretty nicely. do you want a government that does something? like LBJ did with the civil rights act of 1964, or do you want a government that us hands off in terms of real change in our country? i know what kind i want.

red lips.

i love bright, orange-red lips for spring.
i feel like when i wear it i look so dressed up though.
spring time resolution: wear lipstick casually.

too much to handle.

camper is such a sneeky shoe brand.
when did they get so gosh darn cute?

all available here.

delicious dish.

there are some really amazing restaurants in chicago,
but the bristol is one of my very favorites.

i've been here a couple of times. first for my birthday, then when my mom was in town, and also for a staff dinner. each time it was ridiculously yummy. it's nice but not stuffy, so you can go there in jeans and not feel out of place. i have yet to try their brunch, which is next on my list of things to do. okay i'm getting hungry i have to stop thinking about this!

just do it.

will someone i know please get married or do something else fancy so i can justify purchasing this dress??

available here.

secrets of the island.

i have a bit of a fascination with the show lost. this is the final season and some big secrets are being revealed. part of the reason i love it so much is because we have such a fun group of people to watch it with, and we are always coming up with theories as to what is going on in the show. if i do say so myself, many of said theories are pprreettyy good. we knew john locke was the smoke monster way before anyone else did.

my baby.

isn't she pretty? she's a gary fisher simple city and i've loved every moment we've spent together. this winter i rode much more than last, and she did a great job in the cold and slush. now that spring is around the corner (right, chicago? tell me spring is around the corner) she is going to getting even more of a work out. and yes, i think helmets are cool.

oak park, illinois.

one of the things i love about chicago is the amazing history here. frank lloyd wright got his start right outside the city, in a town called oak park. last summer paul and i rode our bikes there (so we might have inadvertently gone through a super tough neighborhood to get there, but that's all part of the fun, right?). the houses and town were just breathtaking. pretty cool to have these so near by.
